Orozco at Dartmouth
April 26, 2012
I am in Hanover to talk about Cyber War and Cyber Peace, but a super quick tour of the gorgeous campus revealed the incredible Orozco mural The Epic of American Civilization. I’m not usually much for murals, but this one is stunning.

We attended the Rendezvous opening at the Zig Zag Gallery in The Plains. Rendezvous is a joint show of Winslow McCagg and Tia Maggio. Great space, gorgeous work, and a perfect night for an opening.
Tia and Winslow make a very nice pair.
Winslow’s art is exceptional. Multiple levels and at least 4 reads per work. The light at the Zig Zag was very good for viewing.
Sorry about the photography here. Too many people to get the light to cooperate.
This was our first exposure to Tia’s work. We bought these two.

Jazz at the hat Goorin Bros Hat Shop.
Rhinoceros.
Somebody replaced the Isabella Stuart Gardner museum (one of my faves) with something much less quirky.
That’s it. Tour over. Time to go home.

Who knew that Minneapolis had an unbelievable collection? Wow. Must go see Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
Kandinsky from two eras.
And a token Van Gogh (there are a bunch of these on Earth)

Juxtaposition
You may not have heard, but people from Minnesota are all shockingly nice. This is all rather concerning.
College and the Arts: Magic and Theater in Chicago

theater houdini Leave a comment
Sadly, the Art Institute of Chicago has really stupid hours and closes at 5pm every day except one. Boo! So in our massive one day stay over in Chicago, we opted for theater.
And a good thing! We joined Michael Hobert’s son Dan for a delightful evening of avant guard theater (TX style) at Chopin Theater for The House’s showing of Death and Harry Houdini. Turns out that not only did Dan know the theater owners, he also knew half the cast.
The play was interesting with plenty of integrated magic. The water trick is the apex, though during our show the suspense was not properly fomented. We had a great time.
We wanted to see Dan do some puppetry. His current work is the untweetable (due to length alone) The Strange and Terrible True Tale of Pinocchio (the Wooden Boy) As Told By Frankenstein’s Monster (the Wretched Creature).
We topped off the evening with dinner at Cumin, which Dan properly summed up as “solid.” I taught their bartender a thing or two about mixology (we made Blue Moons and Sazaracs).
It was a nice switch up to see some theater.

art goldworthy, rodin, sculpture, Stanford 2 Comments
Stanford has 400+ acres of campus. At least 4 of them are devoted to art, with the Rodin Sculpture garden and the Stone River Goldsworthy installation.
It was a gorgeous day. It almost always is here in Palo Alto.
By far the best part of the art pile at Stanford is the Stone River installation. It’s a good thing Brian told us to look for it. Make sure to see this when you go to the Cantor Museum for sure. Goldworthy is very good. And I love stone walls. Eli and I build structures in the river every summer. Sure would be fun to make them more like this!
