On an overcast hurricane day, we went to see a delightful collection of Neil and Kerry Stavely’s art in Millwood. Duvall Design in Millwood, VA is a great location for this kind of show. Artistic and artisan combined in perfect balance.

It was a day of multiple art openings in Millwood, and we only saw three of the four sets of work. At Burwell Morgan Mill, Jim Costello‘s work anchored a retrospective. The work is contemporary and very open with vibrant colors.

At Duvall Gallery across the street, artists Julie Miles and RH Ballard are sharing a joint show. Excellent work by both.
My favorite work of the day is Julie Miles’ work in silver (apparently finished just hours before the show opened—nothing like a deadline!).

Tia Maggio at Duvall Gallery
Our plan was to go to the real opening shindig, but we were thwarted by the new equine arrivals! Not to worry. We made our own opening+1.
Tia Maggio works in pastels and does very intricate, delicate work with beautiful lines and lots of movement. The colors are not “easter colors” in case that’s what you’re thinking. Tia’s work can be dark and mysterious or summery and light. Whole spectrum. Great work. We’re proud to have some of Tia’s stuff in our collection at Apothecary Shed.

One of the great things about the Duvall Gallery is that it is an old old building. The patina inside is a striking and effective offset for the work. So glad it is not boring and white.
Of course, an opening+1 requires a nice cocktail. The doctor’s bag was handy.

My band the Bitter Liberals just played a house concert in a barn decorated with original paintings by Winslow McCagg. In true cross pollination, the show was put on by the proprietors of the Duvall Gallery where Winslow is showing. Living in a county where artists support each other like this is a joy.
