Tia Maggio Rides Again

In the first post-pandemic (that is, fully vaccinated) art opening, we were psyched to see some pastel and pencil by Tia Maggio.  No longer local, Tia lives in Massachusetts.  Much of her current work is inspired by views to be found near her home.

The work was displayed at Youngblood Gallery in The Plains, Virginia.

This one is now in the permanent collection

Interesting displays under glass

The far right pastel is from the same series as one of the ones we purchased

Most of the Tia’s we have are in pastel.  Pencil is a new medium for us.  Same color palette, but finer lines and more space.

We also purchased the upper right piece shown here

This one is also in the permanent collection now. One day it will be framed.

Potato Stone: Youngblood Art Mosaic

Our friend Tia Maggio just opened a shared space show, Mosaic, at youngblood in The Plains. The show also features sculpture by Chilean artist Carlos Edwards.

Tia’s new work, interspersed with pictures from previous phases, was inspired by time in Moroco.

Carlos Edwards told me about working with a stack of potatoes as inspiration for some of his work in granite. So remember: test the water with your potatoes before you jump in.

We added a third Tia piece to our collection. What appealed to us in this piece was the depth of field.

Catch the show while it is still on, and while you’re in town, have a margarita or two (enhanced with extra tequila and lime) at El Agave.

Missed the Opening? No Problem! Tia Maggio Rocks Duvall Gallery

Tia Maggio at Duvall Gallery

Our plan was to go to the real opening shindig, but we were thwarted by the new equine arrivals! Not to worry. We made our own opening+1.

Tia Maggio works in pastels and does very intricate, delicate work with beautiful lines and lots of movement. The colors are not “easter colors” in case that’s what you’re thinking. Tia’s work can be dark and mysterious or summery and light. Whole spectrum. Great work. We’re proud to have some of Tia’s stuff in our collection at Apothecary Shed.

One of the great things about the Duvall Gallery is that it is an old old building. The patina inside is a striking and effective offset for the work. So glad it is not boring and white.

Of course, an opening+1 requires a nice cocktail. The doctor’s bag was handy.

Yes, we had fun! And we learned about some of Tia's methods and inspiration.

Winslow in da Shed

Tia Maggio and Winslow McCagg are at it again with a beautiful new art show at Blandy Experimental Farm (part of the University of Virginia) near Millwood. Nothing like excellent bone fide local artists to make a community thrive!

The show, called “Reunion,” runs through February 28th. Go see it.

When you go, you can take a gander at the pieces we are adding to our collection. They have red dots. One is called Zane Grey; the other, Mutiny on the Bounty. This time we focused on Winslow’s work since we already have a couple of pieces by Tia. The show is a great pairing, however, with equally good work from both artists. We still think Winslow and Tia make a great pair.

The space in the Board room at Blandy is a bit crowded when filled with 30-40 people and the mega conference table, so getting pictures was a challenge. Nice to see the place hum though.

Finally some Winslow is coming home to roost. Here is what the new pieces look like.

Zig Zag Local Art

We attended the Rendezvous opening at the Zig Zag Gallery in The Plains. Rendezvous is a joint show of Winslow McCagg and Tia Maggio. Great space, gorgeous work, and a perfect night for an opening.

Tia and Winslow make a very nice pair.

Nature

Winslow’s art is exceptional. Multiple levels and at least 4 reads per work. The light at the Zig Zag was very good for viewing.

Sorry about the photography here. Too many people to get the light to cooperate.

Winslow. This one looked even better here than at the Mill.

This was our first exposure to Tia’s work. We bought these two.
