Rocket launch? No, solstice bonfire!
Solstice fires take several months to build. After a big fire like the one we had July 5th, we start piling up wood for the next solstice six months out.
Here is what the “core” of the winter fire looks like so far. At the very bottom of the pile is a stack of huge locust logs that will cook all night.

1/4 of a winter solstice fire started in July. locust core.
And here is the garden. Because, well, just because.

The garden in mid-July.

The bonfire as captured by Joel Winstead
What a blast the 2014 iteration of the solstice party was. Thanks for coming! And thanks to “electric triangle” for the new wrinkle…electric music at nightfall.

Electric Triangle as captured by Joel Winstead.
We kicked the keg (not bad for old people) and played acoustic music well past the wee hours into the pre-school hours.
Thanks for making the summer solstice 2014 party magical.

What started idyllic.

Sunset on the solstice (comes early).
Turned to the apocalyptic.

Apocalypse now.

90 feet of flame
And ended with the ridiculous.

Who took my winter??
Salubrious solstice to all, and may your recovery be complete.

10 hours of wood piling (2 today), chain sawing, throwing, and general merriment later—welcome to the solstice fire.

Before the day.

A job well done.

Quite the pile.

Done.

Time for a walk by Shenandoah.

Prepare for winter of course. No rest for the pattern bound on this planet.

Firewood in the red shed.
Remember that tree? Well it has been almost completely consolidated.

Spring light on the winter woodpile.
It’s not just winter we get ready for in Spring. We have to get ready for summer too.

Freshly weedeaten and tilled. Way too early to plant though.
Dirt.

And the summer solstice fire is growing. (Thanks to the tree.) Architecture by Allen.
