College and the Arts: Colby College Art Museum

Colby College is pretty much set up for college and the arts. The largest art museum in Maine (with a very nice collection) is located right on campus.

It is not yet Spring (in April) at Colby College

College and the Arts: CA Route 1

Today, nature was our art. We drove from downtown Los Angeles up 101 to San Luis Obispo, had some fantastic pizza, and then hit CA Route 1 to Santa Cruz. Mesmerizing. Gorgeous.

Good thing we bought sunblock early on! We got fried anyway.

College tours are boring. Art is not. So to make a great trip out of looking at a bunch of colleges, what you do is add art every day.

On #collegeandthearts tour with , we’ll document the arts part here.

Stop one was UC Irvine, which being near LA means a visit to the LACMA right in the middle of town. LACMA hack of the year: bring a minor under 18 and get in free.

We spent our cash on a refresher at the Stark bar instead.

Leukemia Cup 2014 is Yours!

A huge thank you to all Team Tartan supporters. We’re super pleased to announce that once again, the cup is yours! Plus we set another fundraising record to boot. Together we raised $35,095.

YOU GUYS ROCK!

Team Tartan #1 in Leukemia Cup Fundraising, Thanks to our Donors!

Team Tartan in Leukemia Cup Fundraising, Thanks to our Donors!

Special thanks to Phil Venables who this year donated an astounding $20,000 to our team. Also thanks to Mason Brown and Linda Cancro who each donated $1000.

Here is the story of the day of racing.

It began bright and early. Way early. Rebecca in the morning.

It began bright and early. Way early. Rebecca in the morning.

We were planning to race Skirmish again this year, but Sunday night we discovered that the jib stay was broken. A quick repair ensued, but we were afraid it would not hold under racing conditions. So we reluctantly switched to Rebecca. It’s not a bad boat (in fact we won first place in it two years ago), but we practiced on Skirmish and were better prepared to sail a lighter boat.

The Team Tartan Crew

Our crew this year included Eli. Nothing like a 17 year old to round things out in the energy department. Racing is a tiring business—especially for the grinders. After a day on the water, we all come back bruised, soaked with sweat, and bone tired. Then it’s time for the party.

We were outsailed this year by our nemesis Captain Bill. He bulleted three times, though the last race was extremely close (we lost in the last few seconds). We were just plain beat. Another boat’s handicap put it ahead of us in standings even though we beat it across the finish line consistently. Captain Chris led the first two races. Esther captained the third.

Dang. So we’re slipping from first in 2012 to second in 2013 to third in 2014. Better practice, huh?

Third place in our racing class

But we did raise the most money and bring the cup home!!

And so on to the party where we celebrated our first place fundraising by winning the Leukemia Cup.

Next year, we’ll add another burgee to the mast for 2014! Thanks again for your incredible support this year everyone. We’re proud to sail for you all.

Athlete Spotlight: Clarke County Tennis Player Eli Mcgraw

Posted: April 23, 2013

Eli McGraw

Eli McGraw

Eli McGraw

Clarke County High School 15-year-old freshman

Sport: Tennis

Position: No. 2 singles/No. 1 doubles

Parents: Amy Barley and Gary McGraw

Hometown: Berryville

Nickname: My brother calls me “Ulluh”, which is just a nickname he gave me, but that’s about it.

When did you start playing tennis: I started playing when I was eight or nine when I took some lessons. My friend, who is ridiculously good now, played and he got me interested.

What you love about tennis: I love how it’s about just as much your mental faculties as it is your physical ones. You can hit the ball really hard, but when you’re losing, if you’re not mentally strong, you can just give in.

Biggest strength and weakness in tennis: [Strength] my forehand and volleys and I’m a lot better at singles than doubles. I’m a lot more confident with my forehand. [Weakness] my backhand and serves. When I get my first serve in, it’s usually pretty good, but when I hit the second one it’s kind of dinky.

Sport you always wanted to try: I used to play roller hockey and I wanted to get into ice hockey, but I never did. I always thought that would have been a lot of fun.

Most memorable moment in tennis: There’s a guy on Skyline who beat me the first time we played them, but then two weeks later I beat him. It was a really close match and was really tiring, but if felt really good to beat him.

Most embarrassing moment in tennis: Probably just hitting a rimmer off the top of the racket and having the ball go straight up in the air.

Favorite athlete: [Professional tennis player] Rafael Nadal because he’s really good and he’s a great sport.

Favorite sports team: Green Bay Packers. My grandpa likes them and he got me started watching them.

Three people you can have dinner with, dead or alive: [Actor] Hugh Laurie because I really liked him on “House” and he’s just a great actor; [comedian] Stephen Colbert because he’s just hilarious and smart and he makes me laugh; [YouTube broadcaster and member of The Yogcast] Simon Lane because he’s just funny. He’s from Europe and I think he’s a gamer.

Favorite subject in school: I like math, I’m taking both geometry and algebra 2. They’re challenging but I like that you actually get to learn stuff.

What’s on the iPod: I don’t have an iPod but I listen to a lot of different music on the radio in the car or on my brother’s iPod. I like The Shins and Eels.

Pregame routine/ritual: I just kind of hit with my brother [No. 1 singles player Jack McGraw] beforehand to get ready.

Plans after high school: I want to go to college and maybe become a doctor. It might be cool to play tennis in college.

The Ultimate Tuesday and One-legged Skiing

After twelve years of Winter Tuesday, this is it.

What does class 19 do to plus it up (after multiple years of Bryce instruction)? One leg skiing.

Eli on TV

Well, Eli talking about TV anyway. 8th grade chapel talk for the entire school? House.

Eli delivers a 15 minute talk on House.

Strangely, the faculty appeared to like the talk more than the students. I guess when you grade middle school work every night you have to do something in parallel.

TV is evil. See?

These are a few of my favorite things

My best xmas present this year is a painting of Eli that our dear friend April Claggett painted.

Eli is pictured on the couch at the Stick in his standard pose. There are many ineffable things about this picture that make me love it.
