The snow is still deep. We’re still cutting trails with lots of effort. Sophie is shorter than the snow is tall. But frankly, the slow melt is fantastic given our location on the Shenandoah river.

River at Night: Blue Moon on the Shenandoah

Blue Moon rising

Blue Moon rising

We set out at 9pm on the night of the blue moon. My little camera can’t do justice to the crisp glimmering moonlight, or the sultry night with warm wet breeze. Or the sounds.

The moon started rising above the massive trees in the river canyon around 9:30. First it lit up the far bank with elvish magic.

What a beautiful day Saturday turned out to be. The river was crystalline (and flowing fast), the beer was delicious, and the night was filled with fire and music. Joel Winstead captured the 2015 solstice party zeitgeist in some sketches.

Thanks for coming to the solstice party! Support local music; come hear Where’s Aubrey’s CD release concert this Friday at the Brightbox in Winchester.

Three eagle’s nests were spotted (two new ones), including one being guarded by the parent eagles.

Virginia is gorgeous in the Spring. Flowers everywhere you look, even hidden in the grass. And miles and miles of bluebells by the river. There is nowhere I would rather be.
