Garden Apex in Late August

Garden produce from two days.

Garden produce from two days.

When the garden is in high production, picking every day or two is pretty much a good idea. This is probably the last week of super high garden production. After two days, a sweep brought in: corn, tomato, onion, pepper, squash, basil, beet.

There’s plenty more to pick and the garden will likely go into October, but this is likely the peak of production for 2014.

Where do solstice fires come from?

Rocket launch? No, solstice bonfire!

Rocket launch? No, solstice bonfire!

Solstice fires take several months to build. After a big fire like the one we had July 5th, we start piling up wood for the next solstice six months out.

Here is what the “core” of the winter fire looks like so far. At the very bottom of the pile is a stack of huge locust logs that will cook all night.

1/4 of a winter solstice fire started in July. locust core.

And here is the garden. Because, well, just because.

It’s warm – get the snow off so they can fly (and poop!), put candy on for when they are ready!
