The Munch Museum Iteration Three

Romey and I went to the brand new Munch museum in Oslo.  This is the third iteration of the museum, which started at the Munch house itself, moved up the hill for a while, and is now located by the harbor next to the opera house.  The facility is beautiful, and the art is displayed professionally in a world-class way.

Plan to spend several hours following your nose.

One of our favorite pictures from Oslo comes from the upper floors.

The exhibition spaces are well designed, spacious, and properly-lit.

We made some etching/rubbings of our own.

But of course the main draw is the art on the fourth floor.

Of course we saw the scream (in two of three views)

The Madonna

Escalators abound.

The SOLO OSLO by Admir Batlak is stunning.  Fun with fabric.  Art with deep roots in design.

We learned a ton about Alice Neel, especially by watching the excellent documentary included as part of the exhibit.  Wow.

Alice was in many ways decades ahead of herself for her entire life.

Art in Oslo: Purenkel

Visting purenkel.no is always a pleasure.  One of the owner’s excellent pieces now lives at the Stick.  The first post covid lockdown visit to Oslo included some art.

First the monkey.

My current favorite.  Can you tell why?

Norway in a Nutshell: Bergen in a Leaf

Norway in a nutshell is a great way to see lots of a gorgeous country. It’s grueling though! We were on trains, boats and buses for 12 hours! Sadly, there is no beer on the boat until May 1st, so all future tourists make sure not to go to Norway in April.

This montage includes all legs of the Norway in a Nutshell trip plus our time spent in Bergen. We were joined by some great Norwegian friends for the last half of the trip. Conversation and laughter abound.

Norway is stunningly beautiful.

Maplethorpe, Munch, and Viking War Ships

Snow in Oslo and a quick hit means lots of über and two museums.

And then it was over to a very strange juxtaposition indeed. Maplethorpe is just a wee bit better than Munch, but don’t tell the Norwegiens. Judge for yourself.
