Party Animal Welcomes in 2025

We may have had a sedate NYE to ring in 2025, but others did not. They are too wild for us.

Romey says, “cheers mom!”

Xmas 2024

It was very early, but the Christmooses were playing a game of chess. There was prep to be done (dressing the beast) during which blueberry muffins were whipped up.  Moonie had the best idea.

When everyone had gathered, it was present unwrapping time.  Pretty hilarious that the presents had been wrapped for less than 24 hours.

Of course there was a huge Lego set (as has become the tradition). This year it was the Eiffel Tower.

The Legos took well over four days of real effort to build.

Kilt by the tree.

Around 2, the roast was done to perfection with help from the new bluetooth thermometer. Excellent tech.

And it was time to carve the roast beast.

Odessa and Iulie joined us for dinner and stayed for movie night. All of the kids in one place! Very nice indeed.

Break out the beer cheese! And celebrate the most important December birthday in style.

Waiting very patiently at Dulles.

Meanwhile back at home.

And there she is in the kitchen prepping for the party being illegally filmed.

How did my child get to be 30?! Dang. Hopefully, the next generation will save us. Sorry about the mess.

Ah yes. 5/25/25 approaches. Four shots from the black and white party (shot by donnie gray) put into a Warholesque pattern by the excellent April Claggett.

Here is a black and white version suitable for silk screening (hint hint).

Winter Solstice 2024: Let the Community Convene

It was a good one this year.  Cold and crisp with a full moon.  More than 100 people stuck their noses in.  It seems we all need some community time.  And somebody has to turn the sun.

As we age, the end time of the winter solstice party seems to be approaching the start time (4:15pm to see the lighting).  We were inside by 11pm.  Thanks to all who came!

Turn sun turn!

Of course there is just a smidge of prep for a fire like this.  We had some help from Romey’s yard in Berkeley Spings this year.

But eventually the day of the party arrives and it is time to make the eggnog and light the burn barrels.

We always light the fire shortly after dark. This year there were LOTS of people on hand for the lighting.

The only problem with a big iteration of the solstice party is not enough time to catch up with everybody.

We had some fun with the full moon.

And the we settled in to enjoy eachothers’ company. But not before a close call! Oh my…

The Cigital alums were out in force…

Once again, the dogs did it best.

And the party at the bar? Well, that ended by 4am.

Halloween in Bethlehem

Yeah, I know…it’s supposed to be Christmas in Bethlehem. We got it wrong. But it was really fun anyway. I mean check out the joy on Dean’s mom’s face!

We left our safe blue state for a battleground, wondering about the sanity of this country of ours.

We drove fast cars.

We drank bourbon with the skeletons.

We wore costumes that only made sense to us. Andy?!

We had a great time with friends, old and new.

We stayed up way too late dancing.

We wondered what all the fuss was about.

We lived to see another day (though some did not).

Special thanks to Dean and Mary for putting on the best Halloween party in years.

We are creatures of habit. What?!

That’s right, 31 years. Some bits from the latest Felst. Was a fun one though we sorely missed the mooosehut guys.

Robber Robber steals the show

On Sunday there was anointing of the feet and a toast to the dearly departed. Inner Chijuana recharge!

Hot Town, Solstice in the Summer: 2024

OK. It was hot. For a week. And the solstice party was slated for the hottest day of ten in a row. The grass was scorched. The fields were hot. But the show must go on. And go in it did!

We moved the party nexus closer to the house this year (and we liked that, so it is likely to happen again). The patio that Allen designed is beautiful.

These are all “before” pictures. Sadly, nobody took any during pictures that we’ve seen. Too hot to think.

There was some river action this year. JC, Romey, and I spent an hour or two in the river and so did a bunch of others.

The bar (where all of the 20 somethings ended up until 3am) was by the apothecary shed. Namesake alert!

The lighting in 4 easy pieces (taken by Dez).

Who is Dez? Why, this guy…

And Dez (who was once a mentee) wrote a book you should read all about being falsely accused of hacking while Black. Get your copy here.

The heat definitely did impact the party. Only about 60% of the people who said they were coming actually showed up. I would hate to think that we’re all getting too old to party. Lets just blame it on the weather.

Thanks to all who came (especially Eli who flew in for the occasion)! We seem to have turned the sun. Maybe we should have done a rain dance.

Maybe Turns One (and I Turn 1+57)

It all started in the morning with the birthday puppy Maybeline.

She was excited about becoming a dog. Boot did not care.

There were presents from Romey and espresso in bed.

We left maybe behind for a birthday brunch at the Green Pig Bistro in Arlington. Brunch was delicious. Presents were fantastic. But it was the company we loved the most.

Maybeline had a howl about it.

And then it was time for cake for the other birthday boy. We picked up the cake while in civilization (ordered ahead from the Bakeshop).

The cake is so good. Nobody ever believes us when we tell them.

We were gathered around the bar for Seelbachs and cake.

Moonie wanted to be part of the scene.

But when offered the chance, he demurred.

Zombie Paparazzi Roam Rio: Dave and Claudia Make Magic

We were proud to represent Virginia, Tennessee, and West Virginia in Rio at D&C’s nupitals; not to mention zombies.  We were also proud to represent zombies.  Oh yeah, and computer science and hairdressing too; not to mention machine learning. Can zombies even experience pride?  Is a prideful feeling some kind of qualia thing?  Or some other deontic whosy-whatsis?

I guess the only thing we were unqualified to represent was Philosophy. Fortunately, D&C had that angle appropriately covered.  Or maybe it was inappropriate?  (This writing is turning out way harder than I thought.)

The event was obviously some kind of simulation, because it was just too spectacular to be real. We were there in kilt and fancy dress, representing.  Here are some pictures we snapped. Or rather, software’ed, digitized? captured?! internetified??!

At the very bottom of this post are a number of extra pictures splotted on for completion.

Who are “we”?  Well, your resident Virginia zombies of course—Romey and Gary. Gary is the one in the kilt who is having such a difficult time writing this down.

The wedding’s setting was gorgeous.  The Pavilhão Santa Teresa sits above Rio with a view of Sugarloaf, Christ the Reedemer, and Colonial Rio.  A spectacular afternoon with sparkling sun evolved at sunset into a magical fairy-land.  Was this real life?  Only you know for sure. Actually, maybe you don’t. Perhaps nobody will ever know.

Live music? Why of course there is live music. My favorite part of the first quintet performance was the tempo warfare between the flugelhorn slacker and the flute leader guy—something that was only obvious to a musician who has played zillions of weddings.  Flute leader guy was so mad!

Dave’s proud parents.

Of course Dave’s head was in the clouds.

Turns out that we were not the only paparazzi, though it is not clear whether the ones across the aisle were zombies, vampires, or Brazilians.

The Canadians had our backs. This was only slightly worrying.

Enter Claudia, resplendent in her glory.

Together at last.

The ceremony was complex and South American—philosophical, theoretical, mathematical, self-referencial, and precise in a vaguely Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges Acevedo way. Or maybe it was Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez way. Hopefully you know what I mean. The vampire bit was the bomb. So very good—definitely a later run of the simulation (those North Americans have so much compute!)

It was at exactly precisely this time-slice that Dave became married.

Then it was up the hill to the reception. (Since everyone at the wedding forgot to eat lunch, this was a particularly important part of the evening.)

We started out having fun. And then more fun was had.

The Canadians had fun.

And the Australians? Yup.

There was bossa nova. It was live and very very good.

Then it was time to cut the cake? Maybe. Anyway the cake was cut. Then there was dinner. Or maybe the drinks were first. Well, we know there were drinks. Pretty much the whole time.

At some point, Dave showed me his socks. This was significant.

There were a number of toasts that were heartfelt, touching, romantic and excellent. Everyone felt the love.

Dave tried to explain the magic, but things went wrong when he just ended up making more magic.

We were still having fun.  There was dancing.  The DJ was doing his VERY LOUD thing.

And then, out of nowhere, SAMBA!

If you have never tried to Samba with actual Brazilian Samba people in a kilt, well my only recommendation is loosen those hips and move those feets!   We had SO MUCH FUN.

We danced to ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, Olivia Newton John, Men at Work, Bruno Mars, and many other bands trapped in our deepest associations. We danced even if we didn’t know the song. We danced.

Finally, it was time to depart. The simulation glows on in our hearts. Thanks Dave and Claudia for including us all in your adventure.

In the tradition of the Scot’s we leave you with this blessing:

May the best ye’ve ever seen Be the worst ye’ll ever see. May a moose ne’er leave yer girnal Wi ‘ a tear drap in his e’e. May ye aye keep hale an’ herty Till ye’re auld eneuch tae dee. May ye aye be jist as happy As we wish ye aye tae be.
