Shiny happy people
Fun and games in the big city to celebrate amy’s belated birthday. Dinner at Water and Wall was very good (but not exceptional). Arlington has lots of great eats to be had! If you do go to Water and Wall, definitely get the veal sweetbreads. Wow.

Birthday girl
One of the highlights of the evening was seeing more of Emily Shepardson’s art and glassing her “art closet” (which by the way is spreading like frosting on a cake into Victor’s old room. I even got to take home an etching.

Special delivery.

Bill arrives with another batch.
William approves.

80 years ago today, Prohibition was repealed. I believe we will celebrate with a Berryville Passage (even though it may not be all the way legal itself).

One of these things is not (quite) like the others.
Shine on you crazy diamond.

Subway Vivaldi witnessed with 2 friends on the way to dinner.
And the most important ingredient at the bar, amer picon, with which you make the best drink in the world The Liberal:
.75 oz cask strength bourbon or overproof rye
.75 oz sweet vermouth (cheap is better, such as martini rosso)
.25 oz amer picon
Stir. Serve up in a small glass with a Luxardo cherry.
Amazingly, nobody imports Amer Picon to the US. So you have to go get it. Oh well, it’s a good reason to go to France.

cocktail recipe, ginger beer, green watermellon flip, mixology, tea cloth, thonk, unripe watermellon, watermellon
All gardeners know the hazards of not waiting long enough to pick the first watermellon of the season. It’s big. It looks great. It feels right. It makes the right “thonk” when you thump it.
But no. It’s still white inside when you cut into it! Horrors. And just when the tomatoes are going haywire too!

Somebody else had an unripe watermellon too. Looks like this.
Here’s what to do.
Cut out the meat of the mellon and strain it through a tea cloth yielding fresh watermellon juice. Chill that.
The Green Watermellon Flip (a cocktail)
3 cups (or so) watermellon juice
3 oz gin
juice of 1 lime
Combine the first three ingredients over ice in a bar cup. Stir down.
Pour into a highball with huge cubes. Add 1.5 oz of super hot Ginger Beer to flip it.

Somebody let herself in.
The only solution to this trauma is a Berryville Passage.

Berryville passage step the last.

How do we know summer is ending? Let us count the ways.

The morning glories are finally blooming.

Good morning glory.

So are the cosmos in the garden.

The garden is getting brown, and the corn is almost gone.

Beet soup is on the menu (with a hint of mint and a dollop of sour cream).

With a Ferrocarril 1922 from Argentina (where it is almost Spring).
What’s that? Glad you asked. I found it on my trip to Argentina.
Ferrocarril 1922:
1 oz Pineral
.5 oz Hierro Quina
.5 oz dry vermouth
.5 oz sweet vermouth
dash of marischino liqueur
dash grenadine
shake. strain into cocktail glass. This is a delicious drink from Buenos Aires in the 1920s. [Cóctel famoso en Buenos Aires en los años 30, 40 y 50, fue rescatado del olvido por el barman e investigador argentino Guillermo Blumenkamp, ésta es la adaptación de nuestro barman Federico Cuco.]
